Heim Bearings for Linear Position Sensor
Suspension Travel Monitoring
In high-performance automotive and industrial testing, linear position sensors measure the displacement of suspension components. Spherical joints are used to mount the sensor at both ends. They allow the sensor to pivot freely as the suspension moves through its arc, preventing side-loading on the sensor’s internal shaft. This ensures that the data collected is accurate and that the sensor’s delicate internal seals are protected from premature wear.
Industrial Actuator Feedback
Automated manufacturing lines rely on linear sensors to provide real-time feedback on the position of pneumatic or hydraulic actuators. Integrating spherical joints into these sensor mounts compensates for any slight mechanical misalignment between the actuator and the frame. This flexibility prevents the sensor rod from “binding,” which can cause signal noise or mechanical failure in high-speed, repetitive cycles.
Steering Angle Sensing
For autonomous vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), linear sensors track the movement of the steering rack. Stainless steel spherical bearings provide a rigid, zero-play connection for these sensors. Because they are exposed to road debris and moisture, the stainless construction is vital to maintain smooth articulation, ensuring the sensor provides precise, millimetric data for the vehicle’s control unit.
Aeronautical Control Surface Feedback
In aerospace applications, linear sensors monitor the exact position of flaps, ailerons, and rudders. Spherical bearings are used here to handle the vibration and high-frequency oscillations inherent in flight. The spherical design allows for 360-degree rotation and angular tilt, ensuring the sensor remains perfectly aligned with the control surface’s movement regardless of air pressure or structural flexing.
