Types of Stainless Steel Spacers
Profab manufactures precision stainless steel spacers and standoffs in metric and inch sizes, machined to your exact ID, OD, and length specifications. Standard grades include 304, 316, and 17-4PH stainless steel, with tolerances as tight as ±0.01 mm. Whether you need cylindrical, hex, stepped, or flanged designs, we support full custom production from CAD drawings or samples with fast sample turnaround.

Heim Joint Misalignment Spacers
Increase the swing angle and keep the spheres centered.

Stainless Steel Shims
Used to adjust spacing or alignment with ultra-thin precision layers.

Choosing the Right Grade
304 Stainless
Standard grade for indoor machinery, automation, and dry or mildly humid environments. Good resistance to cleaning chemicals. Cost-effective for high-volume orders. Not suitable for continuous salt spray or chloride-heavy process environments.
Food · Automation · Indoor
316 / 316L
Marine and food-grade standard. 2–3% molybdenum addition raises chloride pitting resistance significantly above 304. Required for outdoor, marine, offshore, and food equipment with CIP chemical cleaning. Especially 316 stainless steel has excellent resistance to corrosive saltwater effects.
Marine · Chemical · Pumps
17-4PH
Precipitation-hardened martensitic grade. ≥ 1,310 MPa tensile strength in H900 condition — significantly stronger than 316 at equivalent cross-section. Specified for ball joints in motorsport, aerospace, and high-cycle fatigue applications where load ratings are the primary constraint.

Applications of Stainless Steel Spacer
Stainless steel spacers are widely specified in:
- Electronics & PCB assemblies — M3/M4 spacers for board-to-board isolation and grounding
- Aerospace & defense — 17-4PH spacers for high-fatigue structural assemblies
- Marine & offshore — 316 ss spacers and standoffs for salt-spray and immersion service (ASTM B733)
- Food processing & medical — electropolished 316L spacers compliant with sanitary requirements
- Automotive suspension — M8/M10 spacers for gap compensation in drivetrain and chassis assemblies

Common Questions

Threaded vs. Unthreaded Stainless Steel Spacer
Threaded ss spacers are generally used for fixing and load-bearing positions; unthreaded ss spacers are used for spacing or positioning purposes only.
Are your spacers suitable for high pressure or vibration environments?
Yes. Our spacers are commonly used in high-strength joint structures, and are available in 316 or 17-4PH stainless steel with precision tolerances and surface treatments to ensure impact resistance and non-loosening.
What is the difference between a stainless steel spacer and a standoff?
A stainless steel spacer is a plain, unthreaded sleeve used to create a fixed gap or separation between two components. It relies on a bolt or screw passing through its center bore to hold the assembly together. A standoff, by contrast, has internal or external threads on one or both ends, allowing it to be fastened directly without a through-bolt.
