Gear type determines shaft arrangement, load capacity, noise level, and efficiency. Using the wrong type for your shaft layout is not a performance compromise — it is a physical impossibility. Select type first, then specify module and grade.

M0.5–M20 · DP 4–48

Straight teeth cut parallel to the gear axis — the most widely manufactured type. Low cost to produce, simple to align, no axial thrust load on bearings. The correct choice for parallel shaft drives in food processing equipment, pump drives, conveyor gearboxes, and automation systems where operating speed is moderate and noise is not the primary specification.

Teeth cut at a helix angle (typically 15°–30°) to the gear axis. Multiple teeth are in contact simultaneously, distributing load progressively. Higher load capacity, lower noise, and smoother transmission at higher speeds than equivalent spur gears. The trade-off is an axial thrust force that the bearing arrangement must accommodate. In stainless specification, helical gears are correct for food mixer main drives, pharmaceutical tablet press drives, and packaging machine main shafts.

Conical gear geometry for transmitting torque between shafts that intersect at an angle — most commonly 90°. The only gear type capable of changing shaft direction at right angles without an intermediate worm or belt stage. Straight bevel gears are the correct specification for low-speed right-angle drives such as food processing cross-shaft drives and agitator angle gearboxes; spiral bevel gears for higher-speed right-angle drives where straight bevel tooth impact would generate unacceptable noise.

High torque

A helical worm shaft drives a worm wheel at 90° with a high reduction ratio in a single stage. The inherently high sliding contact between worm and wheel generates more heat and requires better lubrication than rolling-contact gears. Stainless steel worm gear sets are correct for food processing index drives, chemical valve actuators, and slow-speed agitator gearboxes. Worm gear efficiency (typically 40–90%) is substantially lower than spur or helical drives.

304 Stainless

Standard grade for indoor machinery, automation, and dry or mildly humid environments. Good resistance to cleaning chemicals. Cost-effective for high-volume orders. Not suitable for continuous salt spray or chloride-heavy process environments.

316 / 316L

Marine and food-grade standard. 2–3% molybdenum addition raises chloride pitting resistance significantly above 304. Required for outdoor, marine, offshore, and food equipment with CIP chemical cleaning. Especially 316 stainless steel has excellent resistance to corrosive saltwater effects.

17-4PH

Precipitation-hardened martensitic grade. ≥ 1,310 MPa tensile strength in H900 condition — significantly stronger than 316 at equivalent cross-section. Specified for ball joints in motorsport, aerospace, and high-cycle fatigue applications where load ratings are the primary constraint.
