Product Range
Types of Stainless Steel Universal Joints
Profab Machine manufactures stainless steel universal joints in 304 and 316L as standard. 316L throughout for yokes, cross pins, and fasteners where the environment demands it. Operating angles, torque ratings, and bore configurations are confirmed against your application before production begins.

Single Universal Joint
Max 45° (P&B)
Max 30° (needle)
One cross/spider connecting two yokes. The standard configuration for the vast majority of power transmission and motion control applications. Transmits torque through a single angular bend of up to 45° (pin-and-block) or 30° (needle bearing). Above 15°, it can cause vibration and bearing fatigue in precision drives. For applications above 15° where constant velocity output is required, specify a double universal joint.

Double Universal Joint
Constant velocity
Max 90° combined
Two single u-joints connected in series through a centring yoke (also called a centre block or intermediate yoke). Double u-joints are the correct specification for steering columns, parallel offset shaft arrangements, and any drive requiring smooth output at operating angles above 15°. The combined length is longer than a single joint, so confirm the axial envelope before specifying.

Telescopic Universal Joint
Axial float
Steering column
Precision-engineered with angled flanks that grip the V-belt through friction as tension increases. We specialize in SPZ, SPA, SPB, and SPC profiles, ensuring all groove angles strictly adhere to ISO 4183 standards. This high-precision machining reduces belt wear and heat accumulation, extending the service life of your power transmission system. Ideal for industrial machinery requiring reliable torque in washdown or corrosive environments.
Size & Torque Reference
Standard Bore Sizes & Torque Ratings
Torque values below are for 316L stainless single joints at the nominal operating angle (15°). Torque capacity decreases as operating angle increases. At 30° it is approximately 70% of the rated value; at 45° (pin-and-block only) approximately 50%. Always confirm torque at your actual operating angle.

Operating Angle Selector
Operating Angle — the Spec Most Buyers Under-Rate
The operating angle is the angle between the input and output shaft axes — not the total deflection of the shaft. It determines velocity variation at the output, bearing load, and service life. Over-specifying the angle causes rapid bearing failure.
Angle vs Joint Type Selector
0°–5°: Coupling replacement
Either type · Long life
5°–15°: Standard misalignment
Needle bearing — single joint
15°–30°: High misalignment
Needle single OR pin-and-block single
15°–30° + constant velocity
Double joint — specify both angles
30°–45°: Extreme misalignment
Pin-and-block single only
45°–90°: Steering/parallel offset
Double joint (45° max per joint)

Material Specification
Choosing the Right Grade
Most catalogue stainless u-joints are 303. Most food plant and marine specifications call for 316L. Both are described as “stainless.” One corrodes in a CIP washdown environment within twelve months. The other doesn’t.
303 Stainless
AISI 303 is the most widely machined free-cutting stainless grade. It is suitable for indoor, low-humidity applications with no chloride exposure. It is not suitable for washdown food equipment, marine service, or any environment with regular chloride or acid exposure.
Not recommended
316L Stainless
Profab stainless U-joints are used in food processing, pharmaceutical, marine, and outdoor industrial environments. The 2–3% molybdenum content raises the PREN value to ≥24, improving resistance to chloride pitting at the cross pin surface and yoke bore in washdown and seawater service.
Food · Marine · CIP · Chemical
17-4PH
Precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless with tensile strength up to 1,310 MPa in H900 condition — three times that of 316L at similar corrosion resistance. Specified for miniature u-joints in high-speed medical devices and robotic joints.

Applications
Where Stainless Steel Universal Joints Are Used
Stainless steel U-joints are specified in environments where standard carbon steel or zinc-plated joints would corrode, contaminate the product, or fail hygiene audits. They are also used in applications where elastomeric flexible couplings cannot handle the required angular misalignment, torque, or operating speed.
01

Food Processing Equipment
316L needle bearing U-joints are used in mixer shafts, conveyor drive heads, auger drives, and portioning machine heads exposed to daily caustic and acidic CIP washdowns. The sealed needle bearing cups prevent wash water from entering the cross pin contact zone. This area is the primary failure point where carbon steel and 303 stainless joints often seize in food processing plants within the first year of service.
02

Pharmaceutical & Biotech
316L miniature sealed needle bearing u-joints for tablet press drive shafts, capsule filling machine heads, and cleanroom conveyor drives. Electropolished external surfaces Ra ≤ 0.4 µm for direct product-contact zones. Sealed bearings eliminate the lubricant contamination risk that is a validated critical control point in pharmaceutical equipment specification — no grease fittings in the product zone.
03

Marine & Offshore
316L pin-and-block u-joints for windlass drive shafts, steering gear linkages, and anchor winch drives on commercial and naval vessels. 316L’s PREN ≥ 24 provides the chloride resistance required for five or more years of coastal and offshore service without visible corrosion at the cross pin surface.
04

Industrial Automation
Stainless double U-joints are used in multi-axis robot arm drives, CNC machine tool workpiece indexers, and automated packaging gantry drives. These applications require constant-velocity output at operating angles above 15°. Needle bearing double joints are also used at low misalignment angles in packaging line servo drives operating in washdown environments. Single U-joints are typically used in conveyor head drives where the shaft angle is fixed and remains below 15°.
05

Chemical & Process Industry
316L pin-and-block u-joints for agitator drives, pump shaft extensions, and valve actuator linkages in chemical plants handling corrosive media. The pin-and-block configuration handles the high torque and shock loading of intermittent agitator starts in viscous products better than needle bearing designs. Telescopic u-joints for reactor agitator drives where the shaft must accommodate axial thermal expansion during heat-up without transmitting axial load to the drive gearbox.
06

Medical & Dental Devices
Miniature 316L and 17-4PH sealed needle bearing u-joints for surgical instrument drives, dental handpiece mechanisms, and diagnostic imaging equipment drive shafts. OD as small as 8–12 mm with bore as small as 3–4 mm. Zero backlash when assembled with pre-load for position-critical minimally invasive surgical instrument drives. Autoclave sterilisation compatible at 134°C.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a single and a double universal joint?
A single u-joint has one cross/spider connecting two yokes. It handles angular misalignment up to 45° (pin-and-block) or 30° (needle bearing). A double universal joint places two single joints in series through a centre yoke. When correctly phased, the velocity fluctuations cancel each other exactly, producing constant-velocity output at combined angles up to 90°.
What is the maximum operating angle for a stainless steel u-joint?
For needle bearing single joints, the maximum operating angle is typically 30°. Double joints achieve a combined maximum of 90° (45° per joint), which covers virtually all parallel offset and steering column applications.
What is the difference between needle bearing and pin-and-block universal joints?
Needle bearings: rolling contact between needle rollers and the cross pin. Lower friction, higher speed capability (to 3,600 RPM), lower operating torque, sealed against contamination. Maximum operating angle 30°. Best for high-speed precision drives, food plant washdown service, and automation applications.
Pin-and-block (also called block-and-pin or solid block): sliding contact between a hardened block and the cross pin. Higher torque capacity for a given joint size, better shock load resistance, can operate to 45° angle. Requires periodic lubrication or a lubricant-retaining boot. Best for low-to-medium speed high-torque applications.
