Six Grades of Stainless Steel Plates Range
Grade selection is the most consequential decision in a stainless plate order. The right grade in the wrong environment corrodes prematurely; the wrong grade in any environment creates documentary non-compliance. Profab confirms your service environment before confirming grade supply.
// 01

304 Stainless Steel Plate
The most widely used austenitic grade. Excellent corrosion resistance in atmospheric and mildly corrosive environments. Suitable for structural frames, food contact surfaces, enclosures, and general industrial components. Available in 2B, No.1, and brushed surface finishes.
// 02

316 / 316L Stainless Steel Plate
Enhanced corrosion resistance due to molybdenum content, making it the preferred grade for marine, chemical processing, pharmaceutical, and coastal applications. 316L (low carbon) minimizes sensitization risk in welded assemblies. Ideal for flanges, tank liners, filter plates, and offshore components.
// 03

321 Stainless Steel Plate
Titanium-stabilized austenitic grade for high-temperature service. Resists intergranular corrosion at elevated temperatures (up to 870°C). Used in exhaust manifolds, heat exchangers, and aerospace firewall components.
// 04

410 Stainless Steel Plate
Martensitic grade with high hardness and moderate corrosion resistance. Suitable for wear plates, pump components, valve trim, and applications requiring strength over corrosion immunity.
// 05

17-4PH Stainless Steel Plate
Precipitation-hardening grade offering the highest strength-to-weight ratio among stainless alloys. Heat-treatable to H900–H1150 condition. Used in aerospace structural components, high-load brackets, tooling plates, and defense hardware.
// 06

2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Plate
Combines the strength of ferritic grades with the corrosion resistance of austenitic grades. Outstanding resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Preferred for seawater-cooled systems, desalination equipment, and high-pressure piping support structures.

Comprehensive Surface Finishes for Stainless Steel Plates
Specify the ASTM A480 or EN 10088-2 finish code. Profab will confirm the finish code and Ra (surface roughness) before production.
No.1 / 1D
Hot-Rolled, Annealed & Descaled
Produced by hot rolling, followed by annealing to relieve stress and restore corrosion resistance, then pickling or shot-blasting to remove mill scale. The result is a dull, slightly rough, non-reflective surface. The correct specification for structural plate, pressure vessel shells, heat exchanger baffles, and industrial fabrication where surface finish has no functional or visual requirement.
2B
Cold-Rolled, Annealed, Skin-Passed
The most widely used finish in stainless plate and sheet. Cold-rolled to final gauge, annealed, then given a final light skin-pass between polished rolls. It produces a smooth, low-reflectivity surface with a soft sheen. The standard finish for food processing equipment, chemical tanks, pharmaceutical vessels, and most general fabrication.
BA
Bright Annealed
Cold-rolled, then annealed in a controlled reducing atmosphere that prevents surface oxidation. The result is a highly reflective, near-mirror surface achieved without any mechanical polishing. BA produces a more consistent finish than mechanical mirror polishing and typically has better corrosion resistance due to the undisturbed chromium oxide passive layer.
#4 / 2G
Brushed (Unidirectional)
Produced by mechanically abrading the 2B surface with 150–180 grit abrasive belts to create a uniform unidirectional grain pattern. The most common visible finish in commercial kitchens, catering equipment, elevator cladding, and architectural column cladding. The fine parallel grain minimises the appearance of fingerprints and light scratches.
#8 Mirror
Mirror Polished
Progressively polished through multiple grit stages to a reflective mirror surface, then buffed to remove all surface scratches. The highest-gloss mechanical finish, producing a reflectivity. Specified for decorative architectural cladding, high-end signage, water features, and food presentation equipment.
HL
Hairline
A very fine continuous unidirectional grain pattern produced with finer abrasive than #4. The grain lines are barely visible under diffuse light and highly consistent in direction and depth. Hairline is the standard finish for architectural stainless in Asia and increasingly specified in international commercial interiors, curtain wall systems, and high-end appliances.
Applications
Diverse Applications of Stainless Steel Plates
Stainless steel plate is specified wherever a flat structural or cladding element must simultaneously carry load, resist corrosion, and either meet hygiene requirements or maintain long-term visual appearance without painting or coating.
01

Chemical & Petrochemical Vessels
316L plate for pressure vessel shells, heads, and internals handling acids, solvents, and chlorinated process streams. ASTM A240/A480 material compliance with EN 10204 3.1 MTRs is a mandatory documentation requirement for vessels fabricated under ASME VIII, PED 2014/68/EU, or AS 1210.
02

Food Processing Equipment
304 or 316L 2B-finish plate for food contact surfaces , like tanks, hoppers, processing tables, conveyor side plates, and hygienic enclosures. 316L mandatory for contact with meat, seafood, high-salt products, and any surface cleaned with hypochlorite sanitisers.
03

Architectural Cladding & Facades
304 or 316L #4, HL, or #8 mirror plate for building facades, column cladding, lift interiors, and decorative wall panels. Grain direction consistency is critical on large facade installations. Panels from different coils or production batches can show visible finish mismatch under raking light.
04

Marine & Offshore Structures
316L or Duplex 2205 plate for offshore platform structural components, deck plating, bulkhead reinforcements, and subsea structural nodes. Duplex 2205 increasingly specified in place of 316L where the higher yield strength permits thinner plate and reduces overall structure weight without sacrificing corrosion resistance.
05

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
316L 2B or BA plate for cleanroom enclosures, equipment platforms, vessel jacketing, and sterile zone wall cladding. Electropolished flat plate (Ra ≤ 0.4 µm) for internal vessel lining in sterile API manufacturing where surface area minimisation is a validated process parameter.
06

Water Treatment & Desalination
316L plate for water treatment tanks, filter press frames, and chemical dosing skid structures where chlorinated and fluorinated water chemistry is continuous. 2205 Duplex for desalination plant pressure vessels and high-pressure membrane housings.

Common Questions

What is the difference between stainless steel plate and sheet?
Under ASTM A480, flat-rolled stainless products are classified by thickness: sheet is under 4.76 mm (3/16 inch), while plate is 4.76 mm and above. This distinction reflects the production process.
What surface finish should I specify for food contact plate?
What surface finish should I specify for food contact plate?
Specify 2B as the minimum acceptable finish for food-contact plate surfaces. 2B (cold-rolled, annealed, skin-passed) provides Ra ≤ 0.5 µm, which meets the EHEDG and 3-A Sanitary Standards requirement for food-zone equipment surfaces that are cleaned by CIP or manual washdown.
What cutting method should I specify for my stainless plate order?
What cutting method should I specify for my stainless plate order?
Shear cutting is the most economical option for straight cuts in plate up to approximately 10–12 mm thickness, producing clean edges with dimensional tolerance ±1.5 mm. Plasma cutting handles thicknesses from 3 mm to 100 mm at high speed with dimensional tolerance ±2–3 mm; it introduces a narrow heat-affected zone and oxide layer at the cut edge that should be ground or pickled before welding. Waterjet cutting works at all thicknesses, produces no heat-affected zone, holds dimensional tolerance ±0.5 mm on straight cuts and ±1 mm on profiles.
