Product Overview

What Is a Stainless Steel Spray Ball?

A stainless steel spray ball is a CIP device mounted inside tanks, vessels, and reactors to deliver cleaning solution across interior surfaces without disassembly. It connects to your CIP supply line via an NPT thread or Tri-Clamp ferrule and is engineered to deliver a spray pattern matched to your tank geometry.

The right choice starts with two questions: does your tank have obstructions like agitators, baffles, or sensors, and how heavy is the soil load? Light, unobstructed tanks are typically served well by a fixed spray ball. Heavier soil loads and obstructed geometries typically call for a rotary spray ball.

Profab machines custom OEM spray balls to your STEP, DXF, or PDF drawing, including ball diameter, orifice count and diameter, spray pattern, connection type, and finish.

Types of Stainless Steel Spray Balls

Choose the right CIP spray ball type for your tank geometry, soil load, and internal obstructions. Profab machines both types to order.

Fixed stainless steel spray ball

Fixed Spray Ball

Static · No Moving Parts

A hollow sphere with precision-drilled nozzles delivering cleaning solution in a fixed pattern: 360°, 270° with drainage, 180° up, or 180° down. No moving parts means straightforward CIP validation and low maintenance. Suited to light to moderate soil loads in unobstructed tanks.

ConnectionTri-Clamp, NPT threaded, BSP, DIN 11850, socket-weld
Size rangeDN10–DN80 (1/2″–3″)
Spray pattern360°, 270° with drainage, 180° up, 180° down
Typical operating pressure1–3 bar (15–40 psi)
Material304 or 316L stainless steel
Rotary stainless steel spray ball

Rotary Spray Ball

Fluid-Driven Rotation

Fluid-driven rotation provides continuous 360° sweeping coverage, suited to heavier soil loads and tanks with agitators, baffles, or sensors that create shadow areas for a fixed pattern. Rotation speed and coverage still depend on matching pump flow and pressure to the selected ball.

ConnectionTri-Clamp, NPT threaded, BSP, DIN 11850, socket-weld
CoverageFull 360° continuous sweep
Operating pressureQuoted to your flow and pattern requirement
BearingsStainless, self-lubricating by process fluid
Material316L stainless steel (standard)
Selection Guide

How to Select the Right Spray Ball

Tank geometry, obstructions, and CIP pump capability determine both spray ball type and size. A pump undersized for the selected ball is the most common cause of poor cleaning coverage, not the spray pattern itself.

ParameterWhat to CheckSelection Guidance
Tank diameter and heightOverall interior dimensions the pattern must reachLarger or taller vessels often need rotary coverage or multiple balls
Internal obstructionsAgitators, baffles, ports, coils, sensorsObstructed geometry favors rotary; confirm shadow areas either way
Soil loadLight residue vs. heavy or dried depositsFixed handles light residue; heavy soil typically needs rotary plus pre-rinse
Connection type and sizeTri-Clamp, NPT, BSP, DIN, or socket-weld, and port diameterConfirm at enquiry; custom connections machined to drawing
CIP pump flow and pressureAvailable flow and pressure at the spray ball inletSend your pump's rated flow and pressure so the ball is matched to it, not just the tank size
Material Specification

Choosing the Right Grade

304 and 316L spray balls look identical. In CIP service, they are not.

304 Stainless

Standard grade for indoor machinery, automation, and dry or mildly humid environments. Good resistance to cleaning chemicals. Cost-effective for high-volume orders. Not suitable for continuous chloride-heavy CIP environments.

Indoor Automation Cost-Effective

316 / 316L

The standard grade for CIP spray balls. The 2–3% molybdenum addition raises chloride pitting resistance significantly above 304, resisting caustic, acidic, and chlorinated cleaning chemicals across repeated CIP cycles.

CNC Machining Shapes Every Spray Ball's Connection and Nozzle Pattern

Every spray ball's connection features, nozzle pattern, and orifice geometry are CNC-machined to your drawing. CNC drilling creates the precise, repeatable hole pattern that determines spray coverage, and CNC turning and milling shape the connection thread or Tri-Clamp ferrule to your specified size. Welding and electropolished or passivated finishes are available through our qualified process network for the sanitary surface your application requires.

Applications

Where Stainless Steel Spray Balls Are Used

CIP spray balls are used wherever tanks and vessels must be cleaned without disassembly.

Why Profab

Precision Machined to Your Exact Specification

01

Consistent 316L Composition, Batch to Batch

Every spray ball is machined from certified 316L stock, so the molybdenum content that resists CIP chemical exposure doesn't vary batch to batch. The grade you specify is the grade you receive.

02

Custom Pattern and Connection Machined to Your Drawing

Nozzle count, orifice size, spray pattern, and connection type are machined to your STEP, DXF, or PDF drawing rather than limited to a fixed catalogue configuration.

03

Fixed and Rotary from One Source

Both spray ball types are machined to the same material and finish standard, so a complete CIP hardware list can be sourced from one supplier instead of matching parts across brands.

More Questions
Fixed or rotary: which spray ball do I need?

A fixed (static) spray ball has no moving parts and delivers cleaning solution through pre-angled holes in a set pattern (180° or 360°). A rotary spray ball spins as fluid flows through it, sweeping 360° continuously, which suits tanks with agitators, baffles, or heavier soil loads. Fixed is simpler and lower cost; rotary handles larger tanks and heavier soils, provided the pump supplying it has enough flow and pressure to drive the rotation.

What connections are available?

Profab spray balls are available with Tri-Clamp (TC) ferrule connections in 1.5″, 2″, and 3″ sizes, NPT threaded connections (male or female, 1/2″–1″), BSP/BSPP thread, and socket-weld ends. Custom connection types including DIN, SMS, IDF, and flanged ends are machined to your drawing.

Are electropolished and passivated finishes available?

Yes, electropolished and passivated finishes are available. Specify your required surface roughness at enquiry, and let us know if your application requires documentation for a specific hygienic or sanitary standard so we can confirm what's achievable.

Can I get a replacement spray ball to match my existing tank fitting?

Yes, send the original spray ball as a physical sample, or provide its dimensions, connection type, and hole pattern, and we can machine a matching replacement. Confirm your tank port dimensions and CIP connection before ordering.
