How To Measure V Band Clamp

The most critical step in sizing a V-Band Clamp/Coupling is accurately determining the flange diameter. This measurement corresponds to the outer diameter (OD) of the mating flange where the V-retainer will seat.

  1. Measure the Flange OD: Measure the outside diameter of the two flanges that will be joined. This is your nominal clamp size.
  2. Consult Specifications: Match this diameter to the manufacturer’s technical charts, which also specify critical dimensions such as the band width, V-retainer apex, and suitable hardware .

How Do V Band Clamps Work

The V-ring sits inside the outer metal band. As the fixture is secured and fastened (nuts and bolts), circumferential tension pushes the V-shaped retaining ring inward. This V-shaped profile wedges securely into the beveled or top edges of the two paired flanges, pulling them together with a strong axial clamping force. This concentrated force effectively creates a strong and leak-proof seal. At the same time, it can withstand high burst pressures.
