Protection from contamination requires decisions at four points: specification, installation, sealing, and maintenance interval. Addressing only one produces partial protection.
At specification: choose the liner type and housing construction that matches the contamination type, not just the load requirement. Abrasive particulate environments need metal-to-metal with grease zerk. Wet or chemical environments without abrasives need PTFE-lined. Combined abrasive-plus-wet environments, the hardest case, need metal-to-metal with water-resistant grease and a sealed boot.
At installation: clean the thread and bore immediately before assembly. Do not pre-assemble rod ends in a dusty environment and leave them exposed. Cap the ball bore until the mounting bolt is installed. Apply anti-seize to the shank thread, which also acts as a contamination barrier in the thread root geometry.
Sealing: a wiper seal at the housing rim is the most effective passive contamination protection available for the ball-housing interface. Wiper seals are available as add-on components for standard rod end housings or as integral features on purpose-built sealed rod ends. They do not eliminate contamination entirely. Seals wear and allow ingress at the lip. But they reduce the ingress rate by an order of magnitude compared to an unsealed housing.
Boots over the entire rod end assembly provide more complete exclusion than wiper seals alone. The tradeoff is that boots restrict angular travel to the boot geometry. Confirm that the boot allows the full required misalignment angle before specifying it. A boot that restricts the joint to 15 degrees in a 25-degree misalignment application creates binding. That binding is attributed incorrectly to the joint.
Maintenance: define the re-grease interval by operating hours in the contamination environment, not by calendar. In high-contamination service, grease condition at 50 operating hours tells you more than a 6-month calendar interval. Contaminated grease is grey, gritty, or watery. Clean grease is smooth and retains its original color. Replace when contaminated, not on schedule.
