In heavy-duty applications, the maintenance question is not whether to lubricate but how often, with what, and what to check during each service.
Relubrication interval. For greasable rod ends under continuous dynamic load in industrial machinery, a baseline interval of 200 to 500 operating hours is reasonable depending on load intensity. In marine applications exposed to salt water, shorten that to 100 to 200 hours. Contamination from seawater and debris penetrates faster than dry industrial environments and degrades the grease film before it reaches the theoretical end of life. If you are syncing lubrication to another maintenance event (oil change, scheduled downtime), that is fine as long as the interval does not exceed the above.
Grease specification. Use an NLGI Grade 2 lithium complex or calcium sulfonate grease rated for the operating temperature range. For marine and coastal environments, specify a grease with explicit water washout resistance per ASTM D1264. Do not use general-purpose chassis grease in wet or submerged conditions. It emulsifies and loses film strength quickly.
What to inspect during each service. Check for play in the joint by applying a hand load in the radial direction while watching for movement. Any perceptible play signals that the sliding contact surface has worn beyond tolerance. Check the thread engagement length. In vibration-heavy applications, the locknut can back off incrementally. Confirm the jam nut is tight against the rod. Inspect the housing eye for cracks, particularly at the transition between the eye and the shank, where bending stress concentrates.
One issue rarely mentioned in maintenance guides: stainless rod ends in contact with carbon steel hardware will develop galvanic corrosion at the interface if the assembly is frequently wet. The carbon steel corrodes, deposits iron oxide onto the stainless contact surfaces, and those particles embed in the bearing and act as abrasives. If your assembly mixes metals, coat the interface or specify all-stainless hardware throughout.
