02 / Threads

Threads on Stainless Steel Turned Parts

Most turned parts carry a thread. Use the example column as a pattern for the callout on your drawing.

A coating or plating after turning thickens the thread. Give the class that applies after the finish.

Thread forms not listed here are quoted from the drawing.

03 / Diameters and fits

Tolerances on Turned Diameters

Mark the diameters and fits that matter. We plan the turning around them.

  • ±0.01 mm typicalAbout ±0.0004 in, on critical diameters where the drawing calls for it.
  • General toleranceUnmarked sizes follow the general tolerance in your title block, such as ISO 2768 medium.
  • FitsGive a shaft or bore fit, such as g6 or H7, or write the size limits.
  • RunoutName a datum diameter, then give runout or concentricity to that datum.
  • Ground diametersGrinding is available when a journal or bore needs a finer size than turning gives.
  • Before packingFlagged diameters and threads are gauge-checked against the drawing before the parts are packed.

What a diameter can hold depends on its size, its length, and the grade.

Stainless Steel Grades for Turned Parts

Choose the grade by where the part works. The third column says how each one behaves on the lathe.

GradeCorrosion resistanceHow it turnsTypical turned part
304Good for indoor and fresh-water serviceCuts well with sharp tools and a steady feed.Spacers, bushings, and shafts
316LBetter than 304 against chloridesGummier than 304, so threads need sharp tools.Wet and coastal pins, studs, and fittings
17-4PHLower than 316LUsually turned before aging. Heat treatment to a condition such as H1025 is available on request.Pins, shafts, and wear parts
303, 440C, duplex 2205 and 2507 (on request)Depends on grade303 turns freely for dry threaded parts. 440C suits hardened wear faces.Dry studs, wear pins, and chloride service

08 / Design notes

Design Notes for Stainless Steel Turned Parts

Four features raise most of the questions we ask during quoting. A note on the drawing settles them early.

Threads

Galling on Stainless Threads

A stainless thread run dry into a stainless nut can seize while it is tightened. Name the mating part, and we can suggest a lubricant or a different grade for one side.

Shafts

Long, Slender Shafts

A long, thin shaft bends away from the tool, so its middle can end up oversize. Keep the length short for the diameter where the design allows. State the straightness you need as well.

Thread ends

Thread Runout at a Shoulder

A thread cut up to a shoulder leaves the tool no room to exit. Add a relief groove, or mark where a partial thread is acceptable.

Finishing

Size Change After Finishing

Plating and heat treatment can change a diameter or a thread fit. State whether your sizes apply before or after the finish.

10 / How to order

From Drawing or Sample to Delivery

STEP 01

Send the Drawing or Part

Send the drawing file, a sample, or a worn part. Add the grade, quantity, threads, and critical diameters.

STEP 02

Sample Measured

Without a drawing, we measure the sample and draw it for your approval. Tell us which sizes have worn.

STEP 03

Review and Quote

Engineering checks the threads, fits, and grade against the drawing. The quotation can show several quantity tiers.

STEP 04

Approve the Sample

Sample parts are made for you to check before the full run starts.

STEP 05

Production and Shipping

The batch follows the approved sample. Parts ship by sea, air, or express courier.

STEP 06

Reorders

We keep your approved drawing on file. A repeat order then starts from the same revision.

11 / FAQ

CNC Turning Parts FAQ

Short answers for engineers and buyers with a turned part to quote.

Which stainless steel grades do you turn?

We regularly turn 304, 316L, and 17-4PH. Other grades, such as 303, 440C, and duplex 2507, are available on request. Tell us where the part works, and we suggest a grade.

What tolerance can you hold on a turned diameter?

Critical diameters are typically held to ±0.01 mm (about ±0.0004 in) where the drawing calls for it. The figure depends on the diameter, the length, and the grade, so we confirm it in the quotation.

Which threads can you cut?

We cut metric and unified inch threads, both external and internal. Left-hand threads and NPT or BSP pipe threads are available on request. Put the size, pitch, and class on the drawing.

When is a part turned instead of milled?

A part that is round on one axis, such as a pin, a bushing, or a shaft, is turned. Blocks, plates, and housings are milled because their features sit on flat faces. A turned part with flats or cross holes is turned first and milled afterward.

Can you copy a worn part without a drawing?

Yes. We measure the sample and draw it for your approval. Tell us which sizes have worn, because a worn bore or thread no longer shows the original size.

Does a finish change the size of a turned part?

Passivation changes the size very little. Electropolishing removes a thin layer, while plating adds thickness. State whether your sizes apply before or after the finish.

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is no hard minimum. Prototype runs typically start around 100 pieces, and quantities vary by part.
