Product Overview

What Is a Stainless Steel Clevis?

A clevis is the U-shaped forked body with two parallel ears and a threaded shank. It forms part of a pinned mechanical linkage, allowing angular or pivoting movement while carrying tension or push-pull load between two connected parts.

A clevis is not the same part as a clevis pin. The pin is the separate cylindrical component that passes through the aligned holes in the ears and the mating eye. Profab supplies the clevis body and matched pins as a set, or either component separately. See Related Products and the Clevis Kits section below.

Clevis Selection Parameters

StandardDIN 71752, ISO 8140, or custom drawingSend your cylinder model or existing part for a mating-dimension check before ordering to a standard.
ThreadInternal vs. external, metric/UNC/UNF, coarse or fine pitch, hand directionMatch the mating rod or cylinder thread exactly; a coarse/fine or RH/LH mismatch will not seat correctly.
Pin & ForkPin diameter, fork width, single vs. double shearSpecify fork width to the mating eye's actual width, not a nominal size, to avoid side load or slop.

Material Specification

Choosing the Right Grade

304 Stainless

The baseline grade for indoor automation, humidity, and general washdown environments. Solid stainless construction eliminates thin plating layers that chip or wear away at the pin bore under double-shear movement.

General Industry Indoor Automation

316 / 316L

The marine and CIP washdown grade. The 2.0–3.0% molybdenum addition raises chloride pitting resistance significantly above 304, for cylinder clevises and rigging links exposed to salt spray or aggressive sanitizers.

Marine Rigging CIP Washdown

17-4PH

The high-strength alloy for high-cycle and heavy-duty applications. Precipitation-hardened to the H900 condition, it reaches tensile strength up to 1,310 MPa, resisting fork spreading under shock and reversal loads.

Clevis Joint Solutions By Industries

Profab cuts clevises for the mount each industry actually uses, from cylinder ends to facade rigging. We match grade, thread, and finish to your environment, not to a stock catalog.

Clevis Dimensions for Reliable Drop-In Fit

Incorrect mechanical mating creates costly downtime in linkage assemblies. Profab manufactures clevis components with tight dimensional tolerances across pin hole diameter, fork width, and thread pitch. Our precision CNC machining keeps thread engagement to UNF and metric standards without binding, and controls fork spacing to match your mating eye, eliminating axial slop or frame interference. Each clevis rod end is machined to your dimensions for direct, drop-in installation.

Heavy-Duty Clevis Load Capacity and Fatigue Resistance

Dynamic articulation causes fatigue failure and premature joint wear under repetitive mechanical cycles. Profab CNC-machines clevis geometry — fork depth, ear thickness, and pin bore fit — directly from solid 304, 316L, or 17-4PH bar stock to resist fork spreading under peak shock and axial loads. Where a hardened 17-4PH body is specified for extreme-duty service, heat treatment is available through our qualified process network. Smoothly finished pin bores minimize surface friction, reducing rotational wear over the joint's service life.

More Questions
What is the difference between a clevis and a clevis pin?

A clevis is the U-shaped forked body with two parallel ears and a threaded shank. A clevis pin is the separate cylindrical pin that passes through the aligned holes in the clevis ears and the mating component. They are two distinct parts. Profab supplies both the clevis body and matched clevis pins as a set, or either component separately.

Can you customize clevis dimensions, pin diameters, and thread patterns?

Yes. Profab can customize clevis fork width, ear thickness, pin diameter, and thread style. Our stainless clevis is machined to your drawing for bespoke machinery and OEM integrations.

What surface finish do you provide on stainless steel clevises?

Standard finish is bright machined. ASTM A967 passivation is available as an optional finish. Electropolishing (Ra ≤ 0.4 µm) is available for food-grade or pharmaceutical applications. Surface finish is specified at time of order.

Which standard should I order, DIN 71752 or ISO 8140?

DIN 71752 is the German rod end clevis standard for cylinder rods. ISO 8140 covers interchangeable mounting dimensions for 10 bar pneumatic cylinders, short and long versions. Send your cylinder model and we will check the mating dimensions, then cut the thread pitch and slot the standard calls for.
