Choosing the Right Grade
Selecting the correct stainless steel grade for your tube application depends on the service environment, corrosive media, and temperature. Here’s how Profab’s three primary grades compare.
304 Stainless Steel Tube
The most widely specified austenitic grade for stainless steel tube. 18% chromium / 8% nickel composition gives excellent corrosion resistance in most atmospheric, fresh-water, and mild-chemical environments. Cost-effective and readily available in all tube profiles and finishes.

316L Stainless Steel Tube
Marine and food-grade standard. The addition of 2–3% molybdenum raises chloride pitting resistance significantly above 304. The “L” (low-carbon) variant prevents sensitization at weld zones, making it the preferred grade for all welded sanitary tube assemblies. Mandatory for pharmaceutical, dairy, and marine applications.

Specialty Grade Tubes
For demanding applications beyond the capabilities of 304 and 316L: Grade 321 adds titanium stabilization for high-temperature service (400–900 °C) in exhaust and heat-exchanger tubes. Grade 2205 Duplex provides roughly 2× the yield strength of 316L with superior stress-corrosion cracking resistance for high-pressure and offshore applications.

Surface Treatment
Comprehensive Surface Finishes for Stainless Steel Tubes
Profab supplies stainless steel tube in all standard mill and polished finishes, and offers electropolishing and passivation as value-added services. Select the finish that matches your functional, hygienic, or aesthetic requirement.
2B Mill Finish
Ra: 0.5–1.0 μm
Cold-rolled, annealed and pickled with a light skin-pass. The standard industrial finish — smooth, matte-silver, and uniform. Supplied on most structural and industrial tube grades.
BA (Bright Annealed)
Ra: ≤ 0.5 μm
Annealed in a controlled hydrogen/nitrogen atmosphere to retain a smooth, reflective interior and exterior. Standard finish for sanitary and instrumentation tube — no pickling marks or scale.
#4 Satin Polish
Ra: 0.2–0.5 μm
Fine linear brushed grain achieved by belt polishing. The classic “kitchen appliance” finish — widely specified for food equipment, architectural tube, and handrail systems where appearance matters.
#8 Mirror Polish
Ra: ≤ 0.1 μm
Multi-stage polishing to a highly reflective, mirror-like surface. Used in decorative architectural applications, display fixtures, and specialty medical/food equipment where aesthetics are paramount.
Electropolish (EP)
Ra: ≤ 0.4–0.8 μm
Electrochemical process removes surface peaks to achieve Ra ≤ 0.8 μm on interior and exterior. Required for 3-A Sanitary Standards compliance in food, dairy, and pharmaceutical tube applications.
Passivation
ASTM A967
Acid treatment (nitric or citric) removes free iron from the surface and strengthens the passive chromium-oxide layer. Improves corrosion resistance in marine and chemical environments. Supplied with test certificate.

What is the difference between stainless steel tube and stainless steel pipe?
Stainless steel tube is specified by its actual outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness, and is manufactured to tighter dimensional tolerances. It is used for structural, mechanical, and instrumentation applications where precise fit matters. Stainless steel pipe is specified by nominal pipe size (NPS) and wall schedule, and is primarily designed for fluid and gas conveyance under pressure. For sanitary process lines, specify sanitary tube (ASTM A270 or 3-A), not standard pipe.
Can Profab supply stainless steel tube cut to custom lengths?
Yes. Profab supplies tube in standard 6 m mill lengths and cut-to-length per your specification, with tight length tolerances (±1 mm standard). What surface finishes are available for stainless steel tubes?
Profab supplies tube in 2B (standard industrial), BA (bright annealed for sanitary), #4 satin polish (brushed, architectural), #8 mirror polish (decorative), electropolish (EP, Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, for 3-A/FDA compliance), and passivated per ASTM A967. The 2B finish is the standard default; specify BA or EP for sanitary or pharmaceutical applications.
