Spherical bearing brinelling doesn’t look like the evenly spaced dents you’d see on a ball bearing raceway. Here’s what to use, and what to avoid.
Most brinelling articles describe a row of dents spaced at the pitch of the rolling elements, because that’s what happens on a deep groove ball bearing when someone hammers it into place. A spherical plain bearing only has one sliding contact zone between the ball and the outer ring, so the damage looks different. Instead of a row of dents you get one flat land, or a shallow crescent, pressed directly opposite whatever tool touched the part. It’s easy to miss on inspection because nobody’s looking for a single mark instead of a pattern.
The fix starts with what the installation tool actually touches. Use a tubular drift or a bearing installer sleeve sized to bear only on the outer ring’s face, never on the ball itself and never on the inner ring while you’re pressing the outer ring into the housing. If you’re pressing the assembly onto a pin afterward, switch the support to the inner ring and press from that side instead. Mixing this up, pushing on the ball to seat the outer ring, is the single most common way a brand new bearing gets its first flat spot before it’s even finished being installed.
A hydraulic or arbor press beats a hammer for the same reason it does on any other bearing type: controlled, even force instead of an impact spike that the ball has no way to distribute. If a press isn’t available on site, a threaded installation tool that draws the bearing in gradually is the next best option. Either way, check that the bearing is entering square to the bore before applying full force, since angled entry concentrates load on one side of the ball exactly where you don’t want it.
Picking the right tool matters more on a stainless steel spherical bearing than on a coated carbon steel equivalent, because a flat spot on a passivated sliding surface doesn’t just affect rotation, it becomes the first site where crevice corrosion takes hold.
