How to Remove a Spherical Bearing Without Damaging the Housing

Most bearing removal guides online are written for rolling element bearings, where a puller hooks onto a raceway groove and pulls the whole ring off a shaft. A spherical plain bearing doesn’t give you that groove. The outer ring sits in an interference fit inside the housing bore with nothing for a standard three-jaw puller to grab, so people improvise, and that improvising is what scores the bore.

The safest approach pushes the bearing straight through the housing rather than pulling it out. Support the housing on a bench press or arbor press with the bore fully open underneath, then use a stepped steel drift sized to clear the ball diameter and contact only the inner ring or the opposite face of the outer ring. Press slowly and check that the bearing is coming out square every few millimeters, because a drift that’s off center will tip the bearing sideways mid-stroke and gouge the bore wall on its way out.

Skip the heat gun on aluminum rod eyes. Localized heating expands the bore unevenly, and by the time it cools back down you’ve usually opened up the fit just enough to turn a press fit into a slip fit. If the bearing is truly seized from corrosion, penetrating oil left to soak overnight does more good than a torch ever will, and it won’t touch the base material’s dimensions.

Once the old bearing is out, check the bore for score marks before you seat a replacement. A housing that’s already been gouged by a previous rushed removal won’t hold the next bearing’s interference fit correctly, and you’ll be back here again in half the service life you expected. On a stainless steel spherical bearing, a scored bore is also where corrosion starts first, since the damage strips away the passivation on the housing surface right where moisture likes to collect.
