A DIN 71752 clevis size such as 10x20 is written as inside width times slot length, both in millimetres. A 10x20 has a 10 mm inside width, which is also its pin diameter, and a 20 mm deep slot. The thread is not part of the two numbers, though it usually matches the first one.
How to Read the Two Numbers
The first number is the inside width: the gap between the two ears, which equals the nominal diameter of the pin; the pin hole is machined to fit it. The second is the slot length: how deep the opening runs from the ear tips to the slot bottom. In the standard series the slot is twice the width, so 8x16 and 12x24 follow the same pattern. A long series stretches the slot to four times the width, as in DIN 71752 dimension table, for example 8x32, 10x40 and 12x48.
DIN 71752 Sizes at a Glance
| Size | Inside width and pin diameter | Slot length | Thread | Overall length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6x12 | 6 | 12 | M6 | 31 |
| 8x16 | 8 | 16 | M8 | 42 |
| 8x32 | 8 | 32 | M8 | 58 |
| 10x20 | 10 | 20 | M10 | 52 |
| 10x40 | 10 | 40 | M10 | 72 |
| 12x24 | 12 | 24 | M12 | 62 |
| 16x32 | 16 | 32 | M16 | 83 |
All values are in mm and show the pattern, not the full range, which starts below 6x12 and continues above 16x32. In every row above the thread equals the first number. A few sizes break the pattern, such as 4x8, which uses M3.5, so check the standard for yours.
What the Size Does Not Tell You
The designation fixes the fork. It leaves four things open, and each one has to be stated when you order:
- Thread pitch: many sizes also come in a fine-pitch thread, such as M10x1.25 or M16x1.5, so a coarse-pitch assumption can be wrong.
- Thread hand: left-hand versions exist for several sizes, and a right-hand part will not screw onto a left-hand rod.
- Pin and retainer: the pin, and the clip or cotter pin that holds it, are separate choices.
- Grade: the same size is made in different steels, so state 304, 316 or 17-4PH.
To confirm that an old clevis is a standard size, measure inside width and slot length first. How to measure a clevis for replacement lists all seven readings to take.
Conclusion
Read a DIN 71752 size as inside width times slot length: 10x20 is a 10 mm width, which is the pin diameter, and a 20 mm slot. Add thread pitch, hand, pin, retainer and grade to complete an order.
